Extension and Refurbishment
of a Protected Structure
Location : Rathmines, Dublin
Status : Completed January 2011
This project involved a new single storey extension to the rear of a mid terraced Victorian red brick. The original kitchen located in the ground floor of the return was dark and had little or no relationship with the garden due to the utility/ WC lean-to structure. The client wanted a new kitchen to connect with both the garden and also the main house, from which it was very detached. To solve this we remodeled the return and extended to the side and rear. Rather than leave an open courtyard to allow daylight into the original dining room we located the kitchen here and designed a bespoke frameless glass roof light overhead. The window to the original dining was removed and steps added to create a link between these rooms. A folded glazed screen was designed to allow maximum views of the garden and access to the side patio from both the kitchen and the living area. The roof structure was carried over the side patio to reinforce the idea of an outdoor room. The long garden was sub-divided to include a deck, children’s play area, raised planters and a car-parking area. A new storage wall, which followed the line of the deck was designed to accommodate bikes and gardening equipment. The original house was refurbished to meet modern day standards whist being respectful to the character of the protected structure.
