Remodelling of A 1960s Detached House
Drumcondra, Dublin
full planning permission granted August 2005
This proposal involved a single storey extension to the side, two-storey extension to the rear, an attic conversion and a new top lit basement. The side extension houses a new entrance and has a storage wall which leads to the double height hall allowing a connection with the rear garden. The master bedroom is located in the new two storey element which links back to the ensuite and walk-in at first floor level in the main house. The single storey extension to the rear accommodates the open plan living/kitchen/dining which opens up to the deck and the rear garden beyond. This extension is recessed 1.2m both to reduce its impact and also to follow the natural topography of the site. It extends lengthways into the garden to avail of the southerly aspect and to avoid blocking natural daylight and views back to the original house. It is proposed to finish its roof with a sedum blanket (grass) so that it merges with the garden when viewed from the first floor of the main house and the neighbouring properties.
