Extension/Remodelling
of a mid terrace 19thC house
Location : Portobello, Dublin
Status : Completed July 2012
This project involved infilling the side court of the existing Victorian house with a new single storey roof-lit extension and remodeling its lower ground floor to create a new bright open-plan space overlooking the west facing garden. The modest new addition projects less than 1m from the rear gable of the return, so not to impact on the limited garden, but to clearly distinguish it from the Victorian house. A new 3m high aluminium glazed screen which incorporates a mirrored door the gas boiler, is framed in an anthracite zinc surround. The black terrazzo finish to the new insulated heated floor is carried out to the recessed patio, steps to help merge inside and out. The new kitchen/dining extension accommodates a white storage wall on one side, concealing the cooking area and in contrast, a black wall of floor to ceiling shelving on the opposite side, with a large white stone square kitchen island in between The living room located in the centre of the plan is separated from the entrance lobby area by a new wet room which is housed within a mirrored box. The study can be closed off from the otherwise open-plan room by sliding full height panels, concealed within shelving units. The original stairs which was retained is uplit by led strip lighting to highlight its decorative handrail in contrast to the toy storage wall under. The upper ground floor which accommodates the main entrance hall, bedrooms and bathroom was also refurbished as part of the project.
